Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father had left the family, it was looked after by her mother, grandmother, and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford's love for acting grew as a child. She joined the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days, Ford decided that it was not the right venue for her. Ford made an application at the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler, a regular character for Doctor Who. Ford's television debut was in the 1991 episode Surgical Spirit. By the time she graduated, Ford already went by "Catherine Tate". Tate first appeared on television in the year 1991, appearing on shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. She also worked regularly in the theatre, eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate was soon recognized for her stand-up comedy, that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
